1971 Season

The 1971 season was the first to suffer from the Divisional setup, as the Orioles and Athletics would have staged an exciting pennant race.  But since they were in separate divisions, Baltimore won by 12 games and Oakland by 16 -- no excitement.  Of course had there been no division play, the missing games for the Orioles and Athletics would have been made up to decide the pennant winner.  Since the Orioles swept the Athletics in the League Championship series, we will consider them the legitimate pennant winners.  In the NL a close race between the Giants and Dodgers would not have mattered without division play, but both teams were well behind the Pirates.  The Giants did manage one win in the League Championship Series, but the best team still prevailed.  The Pirates beat the Orioles in 7 games in the World Series.
