1972 Season

The 1972 season was shortened by the first player strike, and this had an effect on the pennant races.  In the AL East, the Tigers were declared the division winner despite only being a half-game ahead of the Red Sox at season's end.  But they were only 3rd and 4th overall, as Oakland managed a .600 season and the Orioles fell to 5th place.  In the NL, the Pirates and Reds each won their division by over 10 games.  In a combined league, there would have been an extremely close race.  Since a half game was enough to give the Tigers a division title, we will consider the Pirates the NL pennant winners, at least until we replay the games lost to the player strike.  Both League Championship Series went the full 5 games, with Oakland and Cincinnati winning.  This is the first instance in which the World Series did not feature the team with the best record from each league, although only by a half-game.
