1973 Season

The 1973 season was the first case where Division play seriously hurt the World Series.  In the AL we missed what would have been a close race between Baltimore, recovering from an off year, and the defending World Champion Oakland Athletics.  Only 3 games separated them at the end of the season.  The Athletics won the Championship series, so the AL was represented by a 2nd place team in the World Series.  But this was nothing compared to what happened in the NL.  The Cincinnati Reds, winners of 99 games during the season, lost in the Championship Series to the 4th best team in the league -- the New York Mets, with a mediocre .509 winning percentage and 16½ games behind the Reds.  The Mets came close to winning the World Series, taking it to a 7th game, which would have led to a team with a worse record than 8 other teams being called the World Champion -- the best team in baseball.  We will play the Series that should have been, between the Orioles and Reds, using Diamond Mind Baseball.
